Summer brings with it promise of sunny days, laying out on the beach, wearing great clothes when shopping and wonderful afternoon brunches. But how do you ensure that you are taking the best care you can of your skin? How can you get the most out of your regimen? What might you be missing?

Let’s dive in:

1. Take a cold shower after a hot day.

When you’ve been spending a prolonged amount of time in the sun, there are a lot of aspects you need to be aware of. For one, the heat of the sun itself will naturally dry out your skin. Furthermore, the UV rays can be especially damaging to your skin, contributing to cracking and other dryness issues.

One easy way to contain this damage is to not exacerbate it by taking a hot shower after prolonged exposure. Instead, opt for a room temperature or cold shower to really ensure that you don’t get sweat and dirt trapped in pores opened by hot water. Furthermore, this will help you to retain more moisture in your skin and prevent sweating while in the shower (yes, that happens).

2. Make hats and scarves your best fashion friend.

This is one of my personal favorites. Scarves and hats allow for accessorizing like a pro. A nice scarf can really accent your wardrobe on a hot day when the sun is beating down from above. This helps you to protect your skin without becoming drab. There are collections all over the place that can help tailor these accessories to your personal style no matter what.

Shielding your skin from direct sun exposure is one of the ideal ways to protect it. So make sure and expand your wardrobe to include some awesome headwear.

3. Apply and re-apply sunscreen often.

It isn’t enough to simply apply sunscreen once. You have to do it diligently throughout the day. This is one of the more critical elements that most people ignore. They will apply once every few hours or so, and this is way too infrequently. You need to make sure that you are applying the right SPF sunscreen to your exposed skin at regular hourly intervals. Also, keep in mind that sweating or water demands a reapplication as soon as you finish. Dry off with a towel and reapply.

Get used to a system. This is the best way to ensure that you don’t miss out on an essential application throughout the day. Apply early and often to save your skin.
